TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE Tournaments will typically consist of three rounds. First round match-ups will be determined at random. Match-ups for the subsequent rounds will be determined by the current standings, so that the two highest scoring players will play against each other, the third and fourth highest play against each other, etc. Match-ups will be modified so that no two players will face each other twice in a tournament. The Bye: In the event that an uneven number of players attends an event, one player in each round will be given a "bye". That is, they won't take part in the actual round, but will score half the tournament build total in points (i.e., as if they had an average game). In the first round, the bye will be determined at random, if there is no volunteer. In subsequent rounds, the player with the lowest current standing will get the bye. No player will get the bye more than once in a tournament. The judges will be glad to play a match with the person who has the bye during the round, but the results of that game would not count for the tournament. All tournaments are Golden-Age unless otherwise mentioned (i.e., we're not enforcing retirement of older figures). Tournament victory is based on the number of points earned in matches rather than number of wins. We've found this cuts down on some of the chintzier match tactics (like Smack and Run). Fellowship prizes: The judges determine who gets the fellowship prize for each tournament. We take a vote from the players for who should get it, and we will usually respect the result of that vote, but we reserve the right to award the Fellowship prize to someone else (such as observing someone doing something truly deserving, or to make up for a game irregularity). Maps are placed on the tables before the games as a convenience only. Players who win the map roll at the start of the game can choose to use a map of their own instead of the provided map, per the usual game rules. There is no obligation to use the map provided. Grid Reality and Adventurer's-Atlas maps are approved for use in tournaments. Other third party maps require the approval of the judges before use. The Five-Point Spillover: Ever built the perfect team, only to realize you were over the build total by one point? Argh! We've all been there. We're more forgiving. If your team is within 5 points of the build total, we'll accept it, as long as it doesn't include feats, bystanders or special objects. We're trying to be nice, not give people a free extra five points to fit in another feat.
